Certificates Awarded At Assembly

Three students from Room 3 were awarded certificates at assembly this week. Molly and Kyle have been superstars this week, using their fingers to join sets. Salmaan is taking risks in his writing and using lovely language particularly when his character speak to one another. Keep up the hard work- lets see those brains continue to smoke!!!!

The Students Take On the Teachers At Netball

On Friday the annual teachers verses students netball game was held here at school. The student team was made up of the top netball team who have recently finished their competition for the year. The whole school came out to support the event. The students had some difficulty getting the ball over the tall teachers but they certainly could move faster than the teachers! It was a fun event which ended in a draw. Can you spot the unique netball uniforms of some of the teachers.

We Learn About Being Environmentally Friendly

This term our topic has centred around the footprints we are leaving on our environment. We have had Rosie from the Northshore City Council visit. She taught us about the pollution that comes from a car's exhaust. We caught particulates from a car exhaust in a sock.

We have also mapped the route everyone takes to get to school. This helped highlight where we need crossings. We also listed problems we face along the route like dogs, uneven concrete paths.

Worldvision Talks To Us About Child Labour

The whole school saw a presentation from Worldvision last week. It was highlighting the fact that not all children in the world go to school. In some places children are forced to make money to survive. School and play is not an option for these children. We saw children making fireworks in factories and collecting paper to recycle for money. The presentation involved students from our school acting out the story. The WorldVision speaker is narrating. Haven't they got on cool costumes!

Puppet Show

A visiting group of puppeteers from Australia came to perform for us. They used a type of puppetry from Japan called bunraku. In bunraku the puppets are controlled by strings. The puppeteers wear dark clothing even over their faces so they blend into the background. They retold the story of Peter and the wolf. The music used in the show was written over 100 years ago. Each piece of music was attached to a character. So as a character appeared on stage the music changed. How clever is that!!!

Making Bread

This week we have made bread. The mixture was very sticky to begin with. It is made of flour with yeast added. The yeast gives the bread air bubbles and helps it rise. The honey and water help to wake up the yeast so it can go to work making air. We kneeded the dough and shaped it into the letters of our surname.

Room 3 Argues For Chalk

Our writing focus this term is on persuasive language. We have written arguments to Mrs Harris, our principal, convincing her to let us use chalk outside Room 3 at lunchtime on Tuesday. This came about after an incident in the playground where we were making the wrong choices and fighting. We brainstormed the issue as a group and decided there was not enough to do if junior and senior students wanted to play together. Below are our letters trying to persuade Mrs Harris to let us use chalk.
They were obviously very persuasive because she wrote back letting us do it!!!!! In the photos above we are working co-operatively at lunch, both junior and senior students, playing with the chalk.
